'don't be melodramatic,' the drama queen says to me,
as I try to hide the tears in my eyes
and the giant, her husband, pats my back
reassuringly
have I told them to be careful,
and to call when they get there,
and to watch the roads,
and that I love them,
and to be careful?
all the words I know cannot say what I feel,
how proud I am of how they've grown,
and yet how I wish they were still little,
so I could protect them from the world
and all it's hurts and trials
but I can't.
I never could,
so I give them to God
and hide my tears
the drama queen and the soldier,
and baby dot,
on their way to Texas
'may the Lord watch between me and thee
while we are apart, one from the other'
